Biosphere reserve "Ascania-Nova", the eldest natural reserve complex of Ukraine, was founded at the end of the 19-th century by Fridrich Edward Faltz-Fein. It constitutes of: the largest area of virgin feather-grass and fescue steppe, zoological and dendrological Parks. Among the three picturesque sights of “Ascania-Nova” the palm is surely born by the reserve steppe which has kept its primeval loook within the area of more than 11 000 Hectars. Here grow 478 kinds of grassy plants that form various vegetative communities. Twice a year – in May and August-September – the steppe turns out to be the feather-grass sea. Ukrainian and Lessing feather-grasses ear in May, then closer to the Autumn – feather-grass the fibrous. Animal world of the reserve steppe has mostly kept its aboriginal fauna except for the large types of mammals and birds. Observing the reserve steppe is made on foot along the ecologival pathway together with research officer; duration of the trip is 2,5 hours. The trip ends at “polovetskiye baby” – stone images set in the steppe by nomades-polovtsy over 1000 years ago.
